To the north the nearest place of interest is Lake Vyrnwy (about 30 minutes), which has a picturesque Victorian dam, some shops, childrens playground and visitor centre.
There is a scenic drive around the lake, with regular picnic areas, forest trails, with some appropriate sculptures. Best of all though is the Lake Vyrnwy hotel, which does bar meals and has one of the best views in Wales from its terrace.
Slightly further north is the village of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant, and nearby is the Pistyll Rhaeadr waterfall, an extremely impressive 300 foot drop in a very scenic setting. There are toilets and a café available.
