To the south, via Machynlleth, is Towyn and the resort of Aberdovey, a small attractrive resort with harbour, beach, shops and cafés. There are sand dunes at the back, which is a nice place to settle down for a picnic out of the sea breeze.
Taking the back road out of the attractive market town of Dolgellau (about 30 minutes away) a narrow road hugs the southern base of Cader Idris. There are quite a few good places to climb up to the summit from here, with one of the routes conveniently returning to a hotel with a bar. Depending on weather, allow six hours up and down and take appropriate clothing and the usual sensible precautions. For the less adventurous there is the Precipice walk, also close to Dolgellau, which (once you’re up) is a level 360 degree walk on the flat with fantastic views to the coast and inland. An even lazier option is to follow this road, admiring the views, passing some beautiful lakes, some views of the coast, before descending to the coast at Arthog, near Fairbourne.
Even on a rainy day CAT (Center For Alternative Energy) is an interesting place for a day out (about 45 minutes away). Accessed by the water powered cliff railway there is an interesting tour of alternative energy, sustainable living and organic gardening. Worth the trip for the excellent wholefood café alone.
